綱要Abstract/
In the 21st century, large-scale laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors were built in the United States (LIGO), Europe (VIRGO), and Japan (KAGRA) with the aim of detecting gravitational waves which are ripples in space-time from the merging of black holes or neutron stars. Just like a stone dropped into a pond sends ripples across the water, gravitational waves spread across the universe and interact with these interferometers. It results in extremely small optical path differences between the interference arms and displays a special interference pattern. On September 14, 2015, the announcement by the LIGO and VIRGO collaborations of direct detection of gravitational waves confirmed Einstein's last prediction in 1916: the possible existence of gravitational waves. Now scientists have a completely new window opened to look at the universe and a new astronomy“gravitational wave astronomy”has been born.
It's our great pleasure to invite Professor Takaaki Kajita, the director of the Institute for Cosmic Ray Research of the University of Tokyo, who won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery of neutrino oscillations, to give us a lecture at NCHU. He will introduce the gravitational wave detection project "KAGRA" and the science of gravitational wave astronomy in this precious lecture.
